SYTYCD: Week 5

Hey Cat, I got bad news for ya: a twinkle fairy pooped on your eyes while you were sleeping. :( It's okay, don't lose heart - mix a little lemon juice & baking soda, grab a loofah sponge, scrub scrub scrub.

Sasha & Alexander, paso doble: I'm glad to see them bring things up a bit from last week (not that there was anywhere else to go...), and overall I appreciated their effort and character. And yes, again, Sasha outperformed - news flash, right?! But it still needed more technical finesse and sharp punch in many movements, so I'm not completely pleased. I give it a solid B.

Jordan & Tadd, contemporary: Um, that came out of Travis' brain?? You know what - I'm on board with dark & twisted Travy!! That is SO what I've been waiting to see from Jordan, and I'm now re-obsessed with her; and Tadd, once again, gave us a WHOLE new level of his dancing that just leaves me going, "Where did you come from??" That was a perfect recipe: the music set the perfect mood, the costumes presented the characters without being overly literal, the choreography served the emotion & the emotion served the choreography, and together told the story. That was cool.

Ryan & Ricky, broadway: I liked this, they were in the mood & feeling the genre, and there was a cool balance of subtlety and emphasis in their movement. Apparently the judges feel differently, but I enjoyed it.

Caitlyn & Mitchell, hip-hop: There was a lot of elements in there working against each other, in my opinion - the music didn't mix with the choreography, the mood of their performance wasn't matching the pace & mood of the piece, and their hip-hop styles weren't matching up at all. Mitchell was tight and punchy, Caitlyn was expansive and stretched out in the moves. And the costumes felt like a Jr. High dance recital, not SYTYCD. I think that's enough said about it. But I still love them.

Melanie & Marko, tango: Cat just pointed out that this may be the last time we see them dance together; I think I need to go crack open a pint of Ben & Jerry's and cry myself to sleep. :( Epic Sad Panda. Well, let's enjoy tonight while we can! What the ending flip-move?! Okay that was straight-up, no kidding around. Comment 2: Marko should always wear his hair like that. Lovely. Comment 3: The camera-work on that was just piss-poor-terrible!! It was quite distracting, actually! I love these two. They believe in every step they take, and they believe in each other, and so I believe in them!

Clarice & Jess, lyrical hip-hop: Okay, this is the second week in a row that I have to give major props to Jess - a few moments of that actually gave me chills. Chills! He has NO business being that slick of a B-boy! And Clarice was a perfect counterpart to his performance, I could really see insecurity coming through in her moves and performance, and honestly saw that change as the dance progressed. This is my favorite so far tonight. WHAT?!?! Oh yes, you read that right. Maybe my pledge of eternal love for Sanjaya is coming next, who knows...

Ding ding ding, round 2!

Sasha & Alexander, jazz: I can't find anything bad to say about that, I really can't. It was all great stuff, and everything came together so well. And still, I just can't make any considerable personal connection with them. So, they did great, couldn't have done it any better,  it was my favorite of theirs - but they're still not my favorites.

Jordan & Tadd, broadway: These two definitely have the most rock-awesome costumes tonight! Cool points. There were some great moments, and then there were some slightly juvenile and simplistic moments. I always enjoy Jordan's skill, but she definitely had her little "teenage seduction" act switched on and it kinda made the piece a little too cliche and false. It gets a B, but barely.

Ryan & Ricky, cha-cha: That was definitely too bouncy and forced to really be the steamy cha-cha it was intended to be. They put in great technique & they stayed in character, but it's more than clear that there's no Latin blood running in these two. That's all.

Caitlyn & Mitchell, contemporary: Man, things just aren't clicking for me tonight! I need to go to bed. I mean, I enjoyed the number and the dancing was totally great! But also missed any sort of real depth in the story - it was pretty shallow emotion-wise. But it was great jazz dancing! Okay, I did like it. :)

Melanie & Marko, contemporary: I'm gonna go cry now. It's the end of Mel & Marko. Couldn't have ended better, simply no way to top that. I totally agree with Nigel's comment, it didn't feel like choreography - it just felt like the story itself was moving them, pure emotional inspiration. Can't they just have their own show?? Please?

Clarice & Jess, jive: I guess I can't really claim to hate Jess anymore, 'cause again I really enjoyed that dance, from both of them. Great flicks, great bounce and fastfastfast! Good job & fun dance to end the night with!

Ahhh, worst part of the night, bottom 3!

  • Ryan & Ricky
  • Jordan & Tadd
  • Caitlyn & Mitchell, or Sasha & Alexander - can't decide!

I thought I would first say hi!! and then i haven't really kept up with SYTYCD...I know you want to hurt me, but a friend I work with is the sister to Tadd. Pretty cool huh? I am not sure if he was voted off but it always makes it more fun to watch when you "know" someone. Well hope you are doing great and your family also!

Juddz, thanks for saying hi!! We always talk about inviting you guys over for a little BBQ, and of course it never happens. But it really should! We are doing great, and it looks like your little family is great too! What a darling little foursome you make. :)
