SYTYCD: Week 3

Ah, the Top 16 - minus one tall drink of "tap" water. Sad penquin for Nick. :( Ricky better up his ante, that's for sure. Anyway, let's get this ball a'rollin'!

Since I have been chastised for my lack of blog space dedicated to the lovely Cat, I shall take a moment for such things - I love the Fay-Wray-tastic look she's sporting tonight, so classy and sassy! You're beautiful, love.

I'm also thrilled to see Lil' C at the desk, as well as one of the countless awesome Kristin's of the world, Ms. Chenoweth herself! Looks to be a very perky night ahead of us. So here we go with the first dance of the night -

1st group number: Smokin', sultry & smooth, oh yeah baby! I loved that dance muy-mucho; it had such body and rhythm - moved like hot jazz in a dirty nightclub. The girls were bad with a capital B & they sure sent those dudes packing. Awesome!

Sasha & Alexander, contemporary: Okay, that whole "hands popping outta the piano" thing just might give me nightmares... But the rest of the dance certainly won't, that was very nice. They danced it well & were wholly dedicated to the movement; I'm still not getting enough emotional connection between them as a pair & to the audience, but it was beautiful & highly enjoyable.

Caitlynn & Mitchell, samba: The things I didn't like in that piece really didn't have much to do with these two (i.e., the song choice, the lighting, the costumes, the choreography...) - they did great with what they were given & I actually think Mitchell's hip-action outshined Caitlynn's! It wasn't my favorite dance, but through no fault of theirs. And Kristin is pure riot!

Miranda & Robert, broadway: What a great number for both of them - I feel like they both had a moment with that one. They got to work within their own strengths and styles & bring that to the characters, but it felt totally cohesive & synced - and I believed the story 100%! They did everything that they needed to do in that piece, and I think it'll really pay off for them.

Melanie & Marko, lyrical hip-hop: Marko was surprisingly good in this dance - and by surprise I mean HELLO KISS!! Wow. That was no messing around. Another gorgeously upbeat hip-hop romance from NappyTab, and yet another platinum hit from this pair! No matter the style, these two are always zoned & focused on each other and on what each moment means to the piece. I entirely agree, COUPLE TO BEAT! And I'm putting up the nomination for the Best Judging Panel, LOL!

Ashley & Chris, jazz: The dancing was good & Ashley had a couple quite insane moments with those legs of hers. However, I continue to feel like these two are just a little too young & immature to understand the deeper levels in these pieces and stories that they're asked to tell. They use their arms & legs & movement to try to tell the character's story; but they don't understand that they're backwards - they need to internalize and become the character, and let THAT move them from the inside out. I continue to have great hopes for these two, but I'm still waiting for fulfillment.

Clarice & Jess, foxtrot: I really enjoyed this dance from Clarice & that guy. It was subtle and sleek - perhaps just a touch too subtle, I felt there were a number of moments that could have a felt a bit more grandiose and "big ballroom." Aside from that, it was one of the best foxtrots we've seen on the show, without a doubt!

Ryan & Ricky, contemporary: Okay, how do these choreographers come up with this stuff, week after week?? Pure talent, man. And that was a little different coming from Sonya, a bit more refined with some almost balletic moments. Aaaand... no silly smiles from Ryan. :) I thought it was deeply felt, and the movement seemed entirely driven by personal connection - and it was very rewarding for me to watch. *Now will someone please get Ryan some eye makeup, please oh please?*

Jordan & Tadd: Hmmm... Well, not that they didn't perform well & they handled the genre with deft aplomb - but I just thought it was kinda dumb. :( Sorry NappyTab, you missed me on that one.

2nd group number: Eh, I liked the other group number better. But then Melanie kinda makes up the difference because she is ridiculous. I mean honestly, it's a little unfair.

Okay, bottom 3, let's see if I can get even remotely close this time:

Ashley & Chris
Jordan & Tadd
Sasha & Alexander
Yahoo, it's before midnight & I'm ready to hit "Publish" - I think that deserves a little treat before bed. :) See y'all next time!

*except that blogger was down when I tried to post - stupid blogger, a pox upon your house.*

I had all these thoughts as I was reading and I now I can't remember a single dang one of them. Argh! Yes, eye make-up for Ryann, PLEASE! Brett and I were both scared when they showed her up close. Sheesh! Loved the kiss! OOH BABY! I was laughing so hard my kids came out and told us to be quiet. I think the judges totally missed the boat on who they kicked off. I think it should have been Ashley and Chris. They have never found a deeper connection than just being dancers. I think of them as the Nate and Molly pair. They are young, immature and need some more experience in learning how to process the type of movement and story they are given. I echo your sentiments in wanting them to improve week after week and the continued feeling of disappointment. Okay, I think I got it all :)
