SYTYCD: Week 6

Hmm, trying to decide what I think of Cat's dress this week... I'll have to get back to you on that.

It's week 6! Cat's reminding us that we're down to 6 dancers, and it's our votes that have kept them here. Colby quite astutely pointed out a little correction, that in fact INJURY has kept them here! Honestly, it's a little ridiculous.

Judges getting a little creative & goofy, I think someone must've spiked their punch.

Update: things have just graduated to ree-hee-DONK-ulous!!! Now Billy?!?!?!  Kids, kids, kids - when they say you're "dancing for your life," you don't have to take that QUITE so seriously! Good heavens.

And the jury has returned a unanimous verdict: Cat, go put a new dress on during the next commercial break. Yeah, it's that bad.

Lauren & Twitch: LOL  Giddy'up, ride'em cowgirl! I loved this dance; the choreography was SO slick & clever, it was totally "wild west" hip-hop without anything cliche or trite - just smart. Lauren, little sweet Lauren - she slipped into that dance and took it for a RIDE!!! She was hittin', poppin', slidin', bumpin' - sexy like a girl & hard like a boy. Great job Lauren, I mega-heart you. As usual!

Jose & Alyson: This was an interesting number, very "Benny & Joon" meets dancing. If it were to really stand out for me, it needed to leave the edge of the stage a bit more - not enough substance of dance to really get swept away in. But, Jose did a beautiful job capturing the lighthearted whimsy of the character; and, while there's not much else to say about his dance ability (namely, he doesn't have any, outside his style), he's showed a lot of progress in his performance lately, so I'll give him that for sure.

Robert & Lauren: It's the dance of the dark-haired beauties! I think Tyce took a little trip to France for the inspiration on this one, it was so "hot summer night in a Parisienne nightclub." So, I mean, it wasn't my total to-die-for favorite, but it was danced gor-gee-ously & the whole "nothing but seduction" theme kinda sold the dance short because it was soooo much more than just a dance about getting dirty. The choreography was just sublime & every bit the quintessential JAZZ dance (my favorite style, btw). Robert and Lauren delivered the movements like pros, letting it flow through their bodies as if they weren't even trying, like it was nothing more to them than walking down that drizzly, lamplit street in Paris. Okay, I guess I liked it more than I thought. haha

Adechike's solo: Wow, what a beautiful solo! I don't know why that stood out so much to me, but everything came together just right for a really strong dance. Well played, Adechike.

Kent & Kathryn: You know, I remember when they first started using Sonya as a choreographer I was a little... frightened, is the word? Reluctant, at least. But I'm happy to say that she's really grown on me since then. Happy, because it would be a shame to not be able to appreciate the strange wonder that is Sonya Tayeh! lol I did like this funky, urban side of her tonight - I think if I watched it again I'd like it even better. Kent's great, love him of course - but I'm gonna take him down a notch tonight. :( (listening to Mia's comments right now, she's saying exactly what I'm about to type). I'm quite sure that Sonya meant for the number be a bit more edgy than what Kent delivered; the smile, while always adorable, took out a lot of the "heavy" that the piece needed. His dancing also could've been more committed and gripping, you know? It was fine, but short of its potential.

Robert's solo: Nothing much new, he can dance.

Lauren's solo: Love her! I like to sit here and imagine that, once upon a time in my dancing days, I maybe danced a little bit like her. Maybe. :)

Adechike & Comfort: This was totally like a BET-version of Nappy-Tab's "Bleeding Love" number from Season 4, with Chelsie & Mark - everyone remember that?? I'm sure you do. It was great, as was this! Man, Adechike knew he had a big opportunity here and he fought for it in every beat. He was strong & real, and didn't let a single moment go to waste. I'm really proud of him & really happy for him with this one.

Jose's solo: Meh.

Kent's solo: Classic Kent. Frankly, I think this kid just might be unbeatable at this point. We'll see.

Lauren & Robert: That for sure did not look like a Samba done by an entirely non-ballroom pair! Robert's natural style and sway lent itself REALLY well to this style; his body was pretty much made to do the Samba. And Lauren was everything that the hot female Samba dancer absolutely must be: confident, sexy, with very hip-centric movements. The Samba moves can feel a bit unnatural and backwards to someone who's never done it before; so these two must've been real quick learners in practice, because it all looked completely natural & believable on them. I bought it!

Jose & Adechike: lol I love that Legacy's the choreography assistant on this, too cool. Okay: Adechike definitely won, without question. Jose did try, he really did - but he didn't click with the Paso-style & his arms, in all those "matador" stances, were just... weird. Totally strange and awkward. Both boys were crazy-intense & committed, but neither of them managed the proper bravado in their manner & the perma-puffed-chest that is ingredient #1 for a successful Paso Doble. But you can't say they didn't try!

Kent & Twitch: Oh I'm so stoked for this!! (and Jen, you know I immediately thought of you and Julie when this came on! They seriously need to call you guys up to do a little J&J number, eh? haha) I really appreciated the juxtaposition of Kent doing this with Twitch, that was seriously cool to see the choreography performed on opposite ends of the style spectrum. That being said, I would've LOVED to see that with Kent & Billy, how sick would that have been?! Well, we'll focus on Kent for the moment - that kid just went BUCK-WILD like I have never seen a dancer go on this show! I mean, where did all that raunch come from in that sweet little boy?!?!?! Holy Shamoly, that was like Alex doing hip-hop a few weeks ago, came outta nowhere. Kent just ran away with this race, and I dare the others to catch up.

So, I get another freebie this week with Billy, and the other two in the bottom shall (hopefully) be Jose & Adechike. Sounds like Billy will be able to dance next week, though, so who will actually leave seems quite up in the air!

Thanks for another entertaining week, SYTYCD - now, can I please be the one who gets to rip Cat's dress to shreds... again? Yikes.

I agree that Cat's dress could have made me some beautiful pot scrubbers with all of that netting hanging off her! Try again!

Oh Kristen! You crack me up! Thanks for the shout to me on your blog. I totally dug it.

I realized tonight as I'm watching SYTYCD that I totally neglected to read your blog about last week's show (which I thought was the best overall show so far). So I'm reading as I'm watching this week's. Sure love ya! Thanks for keeping me entertained. You have such a great perspective and a great eye for amazing dancing!
